Why Cats Knock Things Off Tables (and What They're Really Thinking)

Why Cats Knock Things Off Tables (and What They're Really Thinking)

If you’ve ever lived with a cat, you know the scene: your feline locks eyes with a pen, a cup, or a random trinket on the table. Slowly, deliberately, a paw lifts… and with one swift motion, the item hits the floor. Mission accomplished.

While it may seem like your cat is just being a little chaos machine, there’s actually some solid science—and a bit of psychology—behind this classic cat behavior.

1. It’s All About Instinct

Cats are natural hunters, and their instincts drive them to react to movement. When they see something small within reach, it could resemble prey. Batting it around or pushing it off the edge is just part of their built-in predatory play. It’s not mischief—it’s practice!

2. You Might Be Encouraging It (Without Realizing)

Every time your cat teeters a glass on the edge and you rush over yelling “No!” or scoop them up, guess what? You just gave them attention. And for cats, attention—positive or not—is a reward. They quickly learn that knocking things over gets a reaction, and that can be pretty fun.

3. Boredom Strikes

A bored cat is a mischievous cat. When left alone too long or without enough stimulation, your curious kitty will find ways to entertain themselves. Unfortunately, that "entertainment" often involves clearing off your shelves, one item at a time.

How to Stop the Chaos (Kind Of)
While you may not be able to completely stop this behavior (cats will be cats), you can redirect it. Provide engaging toys, window perches, and interactive playtime to keep your cat stimulated. And next time that glass is teetering on the edge? Ignore the drama—you might just take the fun out of it.
