5 Fun Indoor Games to Play with Your Dog

Rainy days, cold weather, or just too much to do at home – sometimes getting outside with your dog isn’t an option. But don’t fret! There are plenty of indoor games that will keep your dog entertained, active, and mentally engaged. So, put down the remote and grab a few household items because it's time to turn your home into a doggy playground!

1. Create a Pet Playground

Give your dog an exciting new space to explore by creating a pet playground with everyday items like discarded cardboard boxes. These can be stacked or arranged in different ways, turning them into tunnels, hiding spots, or obstacles to climb over. Not only will your dog enjoy these new challenges, but it will also offer them a cozy retreat.

2. Hide-and-Seek

This classic childhood game is just as fun with your dog! Start by teaching your dog basic commands like sit, stay, and come. Once they’re comfortable, have them sit and stay in one room, then hide in another area of the house. Call them to come find you and reward them when they do. It’s a fantastic way to mentally stimulate your dog while strengthening your bond.

3. Name Game

Dogs are capable of learning many words, with some dogs able to grasp up to 165! One fun way to teach them is by naming their favorite toys or activities. Start by naming a toy, such as a stuffed bunny, and consistently use the name when interacting with it. Test their skills by laying out several toys and asking your dog to "Get Bunny." They’ll be proud of their growing vocabulary!

4.Play a game of fetch

A good old-fashioned game of fetch is one of the simplest forms of pet playtime and an activity you and your pet can engage in indoors as well as outside. Grab a ball or a favorite toy and gently toss it into another room. Your dog or cat will hopefully retrieve the item; however, the tricky part may be getting it from them in return. One tip would be to use a treat as a stimulus and youll accomplish two objectives at once: having your cat or dog return the toy and also letting go of it. Make sure the path out and back to you is open and clear of any furniture that a pet may collide with

5. Three Cups Game

This simple but fun game challenges your dog’s focus and memory. Place a treat under one of three cups, making sure they all smell like the treat beforehand. Shuffle the cups around and let your dog use their paw or nose to find the correct one. It’s a great way to enhance your dog’s problem-solving skills while keeping them engaged.

Indoor games are a wonderful way to keep your dog entertained when outdoor play isn't an option. These activities provide both physical exercise and mental stimulation, helping to alleviate boredom while strengthening the bond between you and your dog. So, the next time you're stuck inside, try one of these games and enjoy quality time together!
